Monsoon Season

2015

A decent monsoon year. 12 chases accomplished.

June 30, 2015 - Lake Elsinore, CA

First chase of the season. Strong monsoon surge triggered storms along the Elsinore Convergence Zone.

July 6, 2015 - Barstow/Newberry Springs, CA

July 19, 2015 - Perris, CA

July 29, 2015 - Inland Empire, CA

July 30, 2015 - Beaumont, CA

While chasing monsoon thunderstorms in the Yucca Valley area of Southern California a severe supercell thunderstorm blows up over Beaumont as outflow boundaries collided on the northeastern end of the ECZ, 30 miles to the west of my position. I immediately bail for an intercept but due to the road system it was a  40 mile drive and the storm weakened during my approach. At one point the storm was producing 3" hail in the mid levels and some golf ball sized stones did make it to the ground in Calimesa and San Timoteo Canyon, per reports.

August 26, 2015 - Warner Springs, CA

Chased a couple of popup thunderstorms near Warner Springs.

August 26, 2015 - Perris/Lakeview/San Jacinto, CA

A severe thunderstorm over San Jacinto, CA produced dust storms in the nearby town of Lakeview.

September 9, 2015 - Temescal Valley/Lake Elsinore, CA

A severe thunderstorm formed over Lake Elsinore and moved northwest into Temescal Valley.

September 21, 2015 - Blythe, CA

Chased in the Blythe area. Storms had nice looking structure such as shelfs. Met up for dinner with Mike Olbinski and Jarrod Harris in Quartzsite, AZ.

October 14, 2015 - Phelan, CA

Attempted a chase in the Phelan area as storms tried to fire along the El Mirage CZ.  Storms remained barely weak enough. This day ended up being a precursor to a tropical wave that arrived later in to evening creating the MCS that is depicted in the following summary.

October 15, 2015 - Inland Empire, CA

Shortly after midnight on October 15, 2015 an MCS (mesoscale convective system) formed in western Riverside and San Bernardino counties. Over several hours the  complex of thunderstorms moved north across  the entire Inland Empire into the high desert.  Heavy rains, hail, and dramatic lightning pounded the area

October 18, 2015 - Mojave Desert, CA

During a very late extended monsoon season severe thunderstorms broke out across the Mojave Desert of California between Barstow and Fenner during a transitional monsoon event.
